JEDI-JEDI, ELA, NRA OR NLA?

A baby's neck showing what is often described as Nra, Nla, Ela or Jedi Jedi
I've never been able to get a specific name of symptoms for what we locally call that condition in babies where the areas where there are skin folds(like the neck, buttocks, and joints) look inflamed. What is called Jedi-jedi in an area is called Ela, Nla, or Nra in another area. Whatever the name, most mums from this our part of the world know about the condition and can really go about listing treatments for it. Treatments that include some tree herbs, roots or bark to be boiled and either given to the baby to drink or bath with, or even both. Another medical-seeming treatment will be the use of hydrocortisone -containing creams like Visita plus, FunBactA, Skineal etc.

Dear Informed mum, please do not use any medicine or plant part on your baby without first consulting a paediatrician, or at least a family practitioner and not just any medical personnel. Our babies are still too tender to have their skins exposed to substances that may be harsh.
Babies, especially those on the plummy side tend to have friction below their necks, on the ridges on the arms, legs etc. That of the buttocks seem to be common in all babies. The friction makes the area inflamed giving that reddish, fire-like color.

Informed mums it has nothing to do with what you are eating as some will go ahead to reel out food a nursing mum shouldn't eat. Experts say it's simply friction and the treatment ; just keep the place greasy most especially with petroleum jelly. It reduces the friction. The area around the neck seems to get worse if you have a baby who drools a lot and it clears around 4 months when your baby may have started raising his/her head up and sitting. Do not panic, it's not eating into the intestines as usually speculated. For those around the buttocks, Kindly give your baby one or two diaper-free hours daily and apply a coat of petroleum jelly (vaseline as it's commonly called here) round the baby's buttocks when putting in a diaper or nappy on your baby. This ensures the urine doesn't cling to the baby's skin thereby causing or aggravating the skin irritation. And whenever your baby poos, change the diaper or nappy. Do not leave poo on your baby for long. Mum's using cloth nappies should change wet or soiled nappies more frequently than those using diapers. And if the condition seems to persist, or if your instincts demand so( I always tell mums to trust their instincts), see your baby's doctor. Treatment for babies should only be when absolutely needed.

  1. Thanks a lot. I couldn't imagine giving my baby those herbs or even applying Skineal on her skin so I refused all prescribed treatments when my baby had it. I ensured proper hygiene, applied shea butter on the affected areas. It cleared albeit after a little while. We abuse drugs a lot these days and expose our kids to them.

    Thanks Ma'am

  2. Thanks anonymous! My baby also had it in his neck, I simply kept the place greasy most times. It cleared in no time. Shortly after birth, my baby also had it on his bum, I gave him some minutes free of diaper each day and also applied petroleum jelly before changing his diapers. I try encouraging mums to limit drug intake for when it's very necessary. We really abuse drugs a lot

    1. Dear mmesoma, when a baby passes greenish poo it means he is not getting enough milk from both breasts . Same thing happened with my baby but I fed him from both breasts and the colour of his poo changed back to yellow

  4. Thanks Mmesoma for stopping by. What have you been eating? If your been eating a lot of green vegetables then that could be the cause. If so no cause for alarm. Is your baby having any other symptoms? Then you may need to see your pediatrician for proper diagnosis

  5. Good evening my 10months baby poo alot 4four times or more a day ND his bum bum is red nd peeling dey said its jedi jedi Pls what should I give him

    ReplyDelete

    1. Your baby's frequent pooing should be the cause of the redness. So long as the poo isn't watery and your baby is his/her usual self then the frequency of the pooing should not be a cause of concern.

For the redness, give your baby at least one diaper-free hour every day; a period during which his bum is free of diapers or nappies. Then ensure you change the diapers once your baby poos on them. Poo can cause skin irritation. Before putting on diapers or nappies, apply a generous coating of petroleum jelly (vaseline) or Shea Butter (ori) on your baby's bum; this helps prevent irritation when urine or poo touches your baby's bum. If the redness persists, or if your instincts suggest so, please see a pediatrician. Do not give your baby any drugs or herbs. The redness is simply irritation.

We wish you a happy motherhood

  6. Pls my 10weeks baby has a kind of rash around his back and belly. It's an oval/round rash, a bit darker than hs skin but when pinched or peeled, it's whitish. The area isn't fairer than his normal skin. Seems the patch contains other smaller pores. A nurse suggested I mix hs cream wit funbact A and apply and am against dis, pls what do I do?

    ReplyDelete
  7. We at TIM are also against mixing a baby's cream with the likes of FunBactA. Babies' skins are quite sensitive and often develop rashes most of which are harmless especially if they aren't accompanied by any sort of discomfort to the baby.

We suggest you let a doctor, preferably a pediatrician take a look at the rashes.

    1. Here is the response of our in-house pediatrician "Funbact A is very injurious to babies at that age. Moreso, most rashes at that age are self-limiting. The description seems to be the type of rash we call Transient Neonatal Pustular Melanosis (which is also self-limiting) however it's more appropriate to see a doctor ".

  10. Yes, my now 14 months old son experienced that on his neck, nose and bums. I guess your baby is on the plummy side, mine was too. A pediatrician said it was inflammation. I simply kept the areas lubricated by applying generous amounts of shea butter (that was what I used on his skin then) on the areas at regular intervals. The one on his bum even had a fiery red colour. I gave him as much diaper free times as possible ; periods during which I left him bare butted. I also ensured I applied generous amounts of shea butter whenever I was changing him into a new diaper. Just like my son's I think yours is also inflammation caused by skin folds rubbing each other. Keep lubricating the areas, it won't go overnight, but would disappear before you know it.

    Kudos

  18. No, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. That pebbly kind of stool is normal in babies that age. The colour may have a lot more to do with what you eat. Green vegetables in a mum's food tend to make her baby's poo greenish.

I'm really worried.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh Dear Mummy, many working mums complain of this stage you are in. After sacking from soft and succulent breaststroke for 4 months, transitioning would not be easy but you have to keep trying. You may want to 'ignore' the baby's preference for your breasts for some hours. It will take from the bottle when it gets hungry. You may try changing the teats of your bottle to a softer one to see if it will help. We wish you the very best of outcomes.

Shea butter is okay but if the weather is very hot I your area you may need to minimise it's use. The skins of newborns are prone to different kinds of rashes, mostly self-limiting. Especially in hot climes like ours. We think you should let the rash be, it would go in a short while just like all self-limiting rashes. But if you worry so much and your instincts demand so, please see a pediatrician. God bless you.

The reddish lap and Anus..

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thank God your baby has recovered from the fever. From your description of the reddish patches, they are as a result of friction from diapers and nappy. Please expose his bums for now, if possible let the area get some fresh air. And whenever it is necessary to wear him a diaper, please apply a generous amount of vaseline or shea butter on his bum.

Some family foods and pap for a 6 months old is okay. Golden morn is not, in fact it is written on the pack as "..not an infant food".

We are usually more comfortable recommending pediatricians when it concerns babies. If possible, whenever your baby needs medical attention, seek a pediatrician. There is absolutely nothing called Jedi Jedi in modern medicine.

    Replies
    1. Dear Mum, I guess you are currently in Nigeria where right now the temperature is very high. Babies' skins are so sensitive and tend to develop rashes when there are changes in temperature. Most of those rashes are self-limiting and therefore harmless. They disappear just as they come.

You are probably aggravating the heat by the use of Ori. With the current temperature conditions in most parts of Nigeria, lotions will do.

Stop the Ori. Let your baby's skin breath; most times that is all a baby needs for a smooth skin. Sweat and oil-based products can clog up the skin pores and cause rashes.

But if you are so worried, get a pediatrician to see the rashes.

  32. Dear anonymous, there is nothing wrong with your baby especially as you said he is not weak. If he is exclusively breastfed then the greenish colour is as a result of lack of hind milk. Let him empty one breast before you switch to another. That way he gets both foremilk and hind milk.

Besides what you are eating can also be a factor. If you've eaten any green vegetables or fruits then it could also be the cause. Generally the kind of poo you described should be no cause for concern.

Vegetables and fruits are recommended for nursing mums ; the colour of which could appear in a baby's stool. So long as it's not diarrhea and the child is strong, greenish and pebbly stools in infants are nothing to worry about as they are normal.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The rashes are probably as a result of friction at those areas often caused by prolonged wearing of diapers and irritation from poo and urine. Try leaving her bum bare several hours each day and apply a generous amount of vaseline or shea butter each time you want to change her diaper.

As for the poo if it's too watery and frequent then we think you need to see your child's doctor as it could be diarrhoea.

  38. What your baby is going through is quite normal especially in babies who are not on exclusive breastfeeding. Giving the suppository was not necessary. Let the baby be, continue feeding her as normal she will poo when it's due. This is usually a phase many babies pass through at some point in infancy.

If a nursing mum takes cold water or drink, dose it affect the baby while sucking? I was told that my baby will catch cold from sucking if I take cold drink, is that true?

    1. There is absolutely no truth in that. While cold water tends to cool down your temperature, the breast milk a baby sucks is warm just like all other bodily fluids so whether you drink hot or cold water it has no effect on the baby.

    1. From your description it could be a Fungal infection worsened by friction between the skin and urine/feces. We suggest you get a doctor to see the rashes since it seems persistent. The doctor will likely prescribe a suitable zinc oxide ointment. It is not Ela or whatever native name people usually ascribe to it. It is a common condition in babies that gives them discomfort and cause anxiety to parents. It is also easily treated so do not let it bother you. Just get a doctor to take a look at the rashes

  45. Hi , I'm not sure if this is already a closed thread but I just stumbled on this and it's answered a lot of questions, especially as I'm a new mum living in the diaspora!
My mum just returned to Nigeria after staying with me a while but when she was here she mentioned this 'ila' in my son's armpit. Mind you my son isn't chubby at all, he's 5months and weighing 7kg. Mum said it's the 'ila that doesn't make him put on weight and I need to get him agbo!

He's breastfed and formula fed as well and eats a whole lot; night and day. He poos once every 5-7 days and when he does it's dark-greenish !

I don't want to be worried because he's thriving very well and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort but I think he could put on more weight ?!

Is your son weak or showing any other sign of ill-health? What is the frequency of the stooling? Is it like diarrhea?

If your son is not weak, not showing any symptoms of illness and the stools aren't frequent like in diarrhea then you just may need to relax and complete the drug course. To calm your fears you may need to see another doctor, preferably a pediatrician who would take a proper look at your baby

Dear Mum, consider improving the hygiene around wherever your baby stays and of those who handle her. You may also consider trimming her hair if it's so full.

Yes, the loss of hair is usually normal in babies. The patches are also normal and seen more frequently in plumpy babies. In your baby's case a doctor has even taken a look and declared you have nothing to worry about. So relax dear mum, those patches as you described them are usually a result of friction on those parts of the body; that is why you find them more at regions of the body where skin rubs against skin. Simply keep the area greased using petroleum jelly (Vaseline) especially the Blue Seal brand. Some mothers also use Shea butter (ori). The aim is to keep those skin surfaces greased and reduce or stop the friction that causes those patches. The patches will gradually disappear though they often seem to linger for a little while. So just as your doctor said, you have nothing to worry about.

At first, I was told by his doctor to apply Vaseline and I also got aquaphor by Eucerin but no difference, it started on his face and neck but later started spreading to his hands, the creases under his knees and his diaper area, I went back to his doctor and was given 1% hydrocortisone, I started using it but sadly it made it spread even more. Don't know what else to do,my baby has an extremely dry skin. I apply Vaseline generously too, I don't think it itches though, he only scratches his face when he's tired or sleepy. 54. The disease Infantile Seborrheic Dermatitis is what traditionally called Jedi-jedi. Many mothers are concerned about rashes, greenish stool, restlessness and loss of weight especially during hot weather. Many mothers may tried modern medicine with little or no success. The folkloric medicine given by Yoruba herbalists usually do wonders in curing the disorder. So, let's not condemn the traditional methods of treatment, rather we should look into the phytochemicals found in the plants used for the traditional methods, purify them and evaluate their toxicity prior to its usage on human subjects.
Please, respond to my comments. I'm working on synergistic effects of traditional plant extracts for the treatment of Jedi-jedi under laboratory conditions. Thanks

    1. Thanks for your contribution Mustapha. Skin issues in newborn babies are most times normal and clear up without intervention. That is why most pediatricians discourage the use of whatever intervention on babies' skin unless there is a proven need for that. Before treatment regimens are approved, they go through several phases of clinical research; phases which none of our herbs here have been reported to go through (unless you can prove otherwise).
Plants contain pytochemicals which can be beneficial as well as those which are poisonous.

Your research work is a relevant one given that it seeks to find answers to a recurring issue in childcare in Nigeria. But finding a plant, or mixture of plants that have whatever medicinal effect is not enough. Isolating the active ingredient(s), purifying them and finding their minimum effective and toxic doses are steps that must be taken before we can consider encouraging the use of those folkloric mixtures. Their side effects also need to be ascertained.

But then, why encourage the use of chemical intervention for issues that clear up with time? What most people call Jedi jedi or ela clears up with time by just keeping the skin surface moisturized and aerated. Every drug is a chemical and has potential side effects, why bother exposing newborns to such when its not necessary?

    1. Greenish watery stool? Like diarrhoea? If it's not diarrhoea and he's healthy then it's probably nothing to worry about. Sometimes the frequency of a baby's stooling can increase. If the baby is not weak, sick or being easily irritated then it's usually nothing to worry about. The colour of the stool could be something you've been feeding him, possibly lots of vegetables which is actually okay. Or maybe some dietary supplements you are giving him.

If he's healthy and eating well as you said then relax. Babies do not 'pretend or 'hide' anything unusual in their bodies; if something is wrong, it shows in their actions or inactions. But if you are so worried then take him to see a doctor

    ReplyDelete

    1. Herbal drugs are highly discouraged especially for babies. Keep those areas on your baby's skin greased by applying something like Vaseline there. Babies tend to have issues on their tender skins.

You want to take herbal drugs for any other issue or because of the one you mentioned? If it's cos of your baby then please do not take it as it is completely unnecessary. The patches will clear with time. But if you are so concerned, let a doctor take a look at the patches.

I think my baby of 4 months old is not adding weight as I expected,i started her with sma pro at birth till now but she isn't chubby. She's already on pap(millet and guinea corn) still not chubby.A neighbor saw a yellow spot on her cheeks and says"it's nla,if you like give her the best baby food she'll never gain weight unless I give her about".Am so worried, about her not being chubby.I know the yellow spot will go.What do i do.Which formula should I switch to,to make her chubby. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Chubbiness is not necessarily a sign of health.A baby can be chubby but underweight and a seemingly slim baby could be healthy. The consideration is weight, not chubbiness. So long as your baby's weight is within the normal weight range for its age then you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Those spots on the skin are normal and do not need intervention because they clear after a little while so ignore the spots.

So check your baby's weight. Most immunization cards show normal weight ranges for babies of different age. If yours doesn't, then check the normal weight range of babies of your baby's age on the internet.

We do not give formula recommendations especially for babies below 6 months of age who should be on exclusive breastfeeding, but as much as I personally know, SMA is a good brand

  59. Hello, I need your help pls. My baby is 3 months old and is exclusively breastfed. From birth I've been using Ammens powder for her because she had rashes right from the next day after she was born. The powder has been effective although the rashes have always been recurring. Then about 2/3 weeks ago I noticed some discoloration on her neck, chest and the fold around her groin. With the discoloration were increased rashes on her neck, chest and jaw, and skin seemed as if it has been burned. I stopped using the powder on her and continued with only vaseline. But then the rashes got worse and I tried sudocrem on them. (I've been using it on her buttocks since she was less than a month old on doctors prescription) There was no improvement and so I tried baby tribotan. Presently, her neck, jaw, chest are covered with serious rashes and I'm so concerned. She vomits a lot and it goes to her neck. At first I thought that was what was causing the rashes and discoloration but now I'm not sure. Please, I need your help. Sorry for the long post.

    1. Dear Anonymous,
Congratulations on the birth of your baby.
First, pediatricians presently discourage the use of powder on newborn babies.
The best thing to do is to let a doctor see the rashes. Most rashes are harmless and clear on their own but nothing beats a doctor's opinion in a case like this.

If you are based in Nigeria, heat could also be a factor as we tend to overdress our babies in Nigeria. If the rashes are caused by heat then vaseline and other creams would just be worsening the case. Don't worry your lovely self so much, just take her to see a doctor

I use Johnson soap wne and powder for his skin and oil for his hair. Someone suggested to stop the use of oil and use Vaseline instead on his hair. I believe every formula has one for different age grades, just settle for one and watch your baby's reaction to it. If your baby doesnt seem to like one brand or perhaps reacts to it, then you may need to try another brand.

    1. She may be having gas issues but the best thing to do is take her to a doctor. Sometimes the colour of your baby's stool may have to do with what you the mother ate. Please and Please ignore recommendation to boil any leaf or give raw akamu. Raw akamu contains microorganisms which are killed by the hot water used in making pap. Giving your baby raw akamu means you are feeding her microorganisms which may even harm her. If you are worried, take her to a doctor.

And what on earth could contaminate breast milk? Unless it is expressed breast milk in a container. If not there is nothing like contamination. If your milk is infected, even you will fall sick.

    1. Dear Mum. Please do not be desperate. If your baby does not have diarrhoea, has no fever and does not feel weak after each poo, then there is nothing wrong with him. Babies do not pretend. Once anything is wrong with them, it shows in how they act.

If you are formula-feeding him, you consider changing the formula. If he is exclusively breastfed then perhaps you look for coincidences between what you consume and his stooling attitude afterwards.

Getting a doctor to take a look at him and his poo will not only calm your fears, it will also confirm if anything is wrong or not.

Then I also noticed that her bum and thigh folds are red.somebody said It's Jedi Jedi
Pls what do I do, I'm a ftm and terribly confused

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello Mum! Congratulations! You are doing a great job. First, Pediatricians do not recommend gripewater anymore, they suggest it is completely unnecessary. It is normal to be gassy at that age. You can read the article on this link https://www.theinformedmum.org/2016/02/infant-gas-pain-that-great-source-of.html.

Secondly, Keep her bum and thigh-folds greased. What you described is a result of friction in those areas. Use petroleum jelly or perhaps shea butter (ori) to keep those areas greased. You also need to change her diapers more frequently. Do not let poo stay on her diapers for very long, that could also cause irritation. Giving her some diaper-free minutes during which you simply let her bum exposed would also be cool. Once you keep those areas greased, the redness will gradually clear.

      You are doing just fine.

      Delete
  100. Thank you so much. I got some Shea butter and started applying it I noticed the redness is fading, hoping it clears off completely. But what about the pooping almost after every feeding and the greenish tinge to the poop, pls is it normal?

    1. Yes it is normal. The colour often coincides with what you the mother eats. If a mum eats vegetables, the colour will likely show in her baby's poo in a day or two. In whichever case, greenish poo can be very normal.
